I want freedom from mobile phones

Sub-title: the psycho-pathology of mobile-phones users.

I think I know why GDP growth in certain european countries is lower than in others....
that is because a high percentage of people prefer to spendt their time on mobile phones talks rather than in any other kind of mentally-engaging activity. This would definitely deserve an academic study. I can foresee the title:" The impact of mobile phones usage on GDP growth in western Europe". It would also deserve a psyco-pathology study. This is more serious, as this over-dependence on mobile phones clearly shows a pathological state of mind. There is an aspect in particular, mobile phone users find a terrific pleasure in throwing their personal business to those around them. Unfortunately (for me), this is just like throwing rubbish out of the appropriate bins (see blog photos on British trains).

Italy woud be the outlier I guess. There, despite the recession, the half of the country that does not recognize itself in the banana(or bandana)-style (italians know what I am talking about) tries to avoid certain behavioral deficiencies (perche' non vogliono passare per deficenti). Usare ed abusare del cellulare FA CAFONE, soprattutto se vuoi essere un autentico radical-chic il telefono NON si usa! e' OUT! Think that once on a train I was asked to avoid to send txt message because the sound of the tones was annoying. At the time I thougth that was a bit exagerated but now I see it as a sign that there is some hope (for Italy, not for mp users). Despite the recession, yes.
Portugal unfortunately scores really really badly.

It would be nice to create a movement for world-wide freedom from the in-civilization of mobile phones users. Collecting funds to pay them an appropriate psychiatric treatment would also be charitable(it is clearly a psychiatric problem, of the addictive type, worsened by the inherent danger of electro-magnetic waves).

I hope there are other bloggers who hate mobile phones as I do.

A ghost is wandering in Europe

There is a ghost wandering in Europe.. the ghost of the flat tax.

It is very likely that nobody in southern europe - especially in Italy- knows what it is, and maybe that is not too bad.

Anyway, if you want to read about it, simply type the magic words in google and you will get the worst of the crap from the neo-con movement. Actually, the idea comes from the US (where it is well known that economic growth goes together with civilization, as Katrina has shown). It has been implemeted though in those manifestos of civilization that are the european eastern countries (talking about racism, one of my favourite topics, has some blog readers watched the post-newsnight on Slovenia on BBC2 last night?) and now even in Russia...what an heaven. Think that the Adam Smith institute was citing as an example to follow the abolition of inheritance tax in Russia. Putin, the free market champion.. Certain people simply lack a sense of ridiculous..
I would suggest them to study the italian case.

Anyway, it is important - I think- to start understanding the danger and getting ready for the battle. I suspect it will become an hot topic, depending very much on the German election outcome.

Happy Brithday, Chiara

Today is Chiara's birthday. So, happy birthday, buon compleanno e um grande beijinho.

Será que o governo acordou?

Parece que o governo português acordou (finalmente). Falo do problema dos incêndios florestais. É que o governo tomou algumas medidas que, pelo menos, alimentam a esperança: nos próximos anos talvez as coisas venham a ser diferentes.

Depois do Ministro António Costa, defender o desenvolvimento de um avião de combate a incêndios, em parceria com os franceses (aqui). Que até pode ser um projecto interessante, mas não é aí que está o problema. Depois do nosso PR (cada vez mais gagá) , ter proposto a limpeza coerciva das florestas por parte dos proprietários (aqui). Os dados mais recentes vêm confirmar que também não é aí que está o problema: afinal, mais de um quinto da área ardida é de propriedade do estado.

Mas finalmente, dizia eu, o governo decidiu tomar medidas que talvez invertam o rumo das coisas (aqui). A mais relevante das medidas, já saudada pela associação nacional de bombeiros profissionais, é a criação de um corpo profissional especializado no combate aos incêndios florestais (aqui). Quando os incêndios de Portugal eram notícia por essa europa fora, lembro-me de ter dito à Chiara (que é Italiana): que o serviço de bombeiros em Portugal é baseado no voluntariado, que a maioria dos bombeiros que combatem o incêndios em Portugal estão mal preparados, e que são muito poucas as corporações de bombeiros profissionais em Portugal. Ela nem queria acreditar; disse-me qualquer coisas como: "não admira que Portugal esteja a arder daquela maneira". Aqui no Reino Unido todas as corporações de bombeiros são profissionais. Em Itália, a maioria das corporações também são profissionais. Os bombeiros destas corporações, como os poucos bombeiros profissionais de Portugal, são bem preparados para o combate aos incêndios.

Esta medida alimenta a esperança, mas fica a sensação que ainda há muito por fazer. Por exemplo: porque não tentar tornar rentável a floresta portuguesa? Esta medida pode contrubuir para a sustentabilidade da floresta. A sociedade portuguesa está cada vez mais urbana; as pessoas vivem afastadas da natureza, e nos seus tempos livres têm necessidade do contacto com a mesma. Não se trata de fazer da floresta um produto de marketing, mas sim fomentar o interesse e respeito das pessoas pela natureza, e fomentar, também, o seu usofruto.

Portugal tem um excelente património florestal (ou tinha?). Há que incentivar o uso deste património pelas pessoas; se for bem feito, pode ajudar a manter a floresta limpa.
